THE VETERAN’S REVERIE: RESEARCHING GENEALOGY (MILITARY BIOGRAPHY) AT THE U.S. ARMY MILITARY HISTORY INSTITUTE
From an old soldier’s poetic remembrances, the story of four brothers emerges from the boiling caldron of civil war. MSgt. Baker’s presentation explores the role that military studies can play in researching family history. It brings to light the words, deeds and gallantry of a few of the forgotten participants involved in the nation’s greatest conflict.

WEBSITE & DATABASE SOURCES FOR MILITARY RESEARCH AT THE NEW JERSEY STATE ARCHIVES
Ms. Calder and Ms. Thiele will instruct the audience in using the State Archives’ website and in-house databases for military research. Recent and planned website developments will be featured, including imaged collections and new data files.

TRACING YOUR REVOLUTIONARY WAR ANCESTOR AT THE NEW JERSEY STATE ARCHIVES
The State Archives holds extensive collections documenting military service on both sides of the Revolutionary War and contributions to the “revolutionary cause” which may qualify descendants for admission into lineage organizations. Sources range from pay and pension records to court proceedings and claims for damage by troops. Ms. Medich will discuss the State Archives’ related collections, including more obscure sources, and will use case studies to demonstrate how various aspects of revolutionary activity can be investigated.

UNCLE SAM WANTS YOU! TWENTIETH-CENTURY MILITARY RESEARCH
Mr. Fermi will discuss sources for researching military service during the primary conflicts of the twentieth century, namely World War I, World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He will review a variety of genealogically valuable records pertaining to draft registration and service, and documenting those who were wounded, killed, taken prisoner, buried, naturalized, and so on.

Ask the Expert Panel
Join our group discussions before and after lunch, where our panel of experts will address general questions about genealogical research. Based on their experience as archivists and professional genealogists, the panel will offer direction and tips on sources to help you move forward in your genealogical quests. Time permitting, panelists will provide examples of some of their own successes in overcoming research roadblocks.

One-on-One Sessions
Sign up for a fifteen-minute, one-on-one session with an expert from our panel at the registration table when you arrive. Take advantage of an opportunity to receive personalized research direction from a professional genealogist or archivist. Scheduling is limited, and will be on a first-come first-served basis. Please be prepared with a narrowly focused research problem and information on what sources have been consulted already.
