| The 1930 Winslow Township Census
1930 was the year after the Stock Market Crash of 1929, and was the
beginning of the worst depression our country has ever experienced.
Because of the Federal Law banning the publication of census data until
72 years after the census is taken, the 1930 census was not available until April 2002.
Comparing the 1930 census figures with those of 1850 (the first census
taken of Winslow as a new Township), shows the following:
1850
- No. of Families 270
- No. of Afro-American Families 1
- No. of residents 1.540
- Avg. size of Family 6
- No. of Farms 54
1930
- No. of Families 1063
- No. of Afro-American Families 104
- No. of residents 4704
- Avg. size of Families 4
- No. of Farms 356
1930 shows a township of homeowner; out of 1063 families, 860 owned or
were buying their homes.
Of the rental homes, the rents varied between $4 and $35 per month.
The value of properties included Homes and Farmlands and ran between $700 and $15,000.
Abount half of the residents did not disclose to the census taker the value of their
property, possibly because they didn't know or because they didn't want anyone else to know.
An interesting thing about the 1930 Census was that it asked if the
family owned a radio; only 423 of 1063 said yes. There were many families where there
were more then 5 or more teenagers, and there was no radio in the home. How times have
changed.
Another question was: Are you a veteran?
In 1930 in Winslow Township there were 94 veterans of World War I, and
15 veterans of the Spanish-American War. There was one veteran of the Civil War, and
unbelievably, he fought for the South. He was born in North Carolina in 1842, married
and had children in North Carolina and moved to Sicklerville. He was 88 years old in
1930.
The census for the year 1940 will be available to the public in April
2012, unless the law is changed. The original law was based on an average life
expectancy at the time the law was passed of 72 years, since then the average life expectancy
has increased.
