Hudson CityThe Hudson City Section of Jersey City is at the extreme northern end of the city and follows the lines of the earlier City of Hudson which was incorporated into Jersey City in 1869. The boundaries of Hudson City were Paterson Plank Road on the north; the City of Hoboken on the east; the Pennsylvania railroad cut on the south (now at Journal Square); and the Hackensack River and Penhorn Creek on the west. In its early days the area was another section of the township of Bergen and was a wilderness known as Bergen Woods. Due to the rugged nature of the area it was slow to develop with settlements north and south of it starting before anyone lived in Bergen Woods. A village began around 1794 in the Five Corners area after the completion of the Newark Turnpike and the Hoboken Turnpike which crossed at that location. An early feature of the area was the Beacon Race Course laid out by Cyrus Browning in 1838 and closed in 1843. It occupied an area near the current Beacon Avenue and the former Reservoir #3. The area tried a number of times to secure its independence from the Town of Bergen but was not successful until March 4, 1852 when it was set off by the legislation. On April 11, 1855 the area was incorporated as the City of Hudson. The new charter called for the annual election of a mayor and a Board of Alderman. A Board of Education was appointed by the common council in June 1855. The original population was 3,322 and doubled every five years reaching 20,000 at the time of incorporation in Jersey City. Here is a list of the municpal officials of Hudson City's fifteeen year existence: Mayors Gen. E.R.V. Wright-1855 Garret D. Van Reipen - 1856,1861,1868 Edmund T.
