On Sunday, January 9, our meeting featured a presentation by Kathleen S. Dodds, D.A., Archival Assistant at the Msgr. William Noé Field Special Collections Center and Archives of the Walsh Library at Seton Hall University, on "The Use of Catholic Sacramental Records in Genealogy Research". Preceding the MCGS general meeting, the winners of the 2004 Family History Month essay contest were presented with their awards.

On Sunday, November 14, our meeting featured a presentation by Mary Ann Kiernan of the Monmouth County Archives on MCA's new collections.

On Sunday, September 12, our meeting featured a presentation by David Beardsley of BioFiles LLC on creating multimedia genealogy projects.

On Sunday, July 11, MCGS will hosted its annual Show-N-Tell meeting.

On Sunday, May 2, our meeting featured a presentation by Chad Leinaweaver on "Beating Librarians at Their Own Game".

On Sunday, March 13, our meeting featured a presentation by John Konvalinka on "Keeping Up With the Neighbors - Learn About Your Ancestors from the People They Knew".
On Sunday, 12 January 2003, our meeting featured a presentation "A Molly Pitcher Sourcebook" by Dr. David Martin. Also, presented were the prizes to our Family History Month Essay Contest winners.
On Sunday, November 9, our meeting featured a presentation by Beth Potter entitled "Discovering the History of Your House". She encouraged the use of deeds, censuses, mortgages and probate records of the landowner/homeowner.
On Sunday, September 14, our meeting featured a presentation by John Konvalinka entitled "Newest, Unusual and Exciting Web Sites for Genealogists".
On Sunday, July 13, our annual "Show-n-Tell" meeting was held. This year's theme was "My Favorite Thing". Attendees were encouraged to participate by talking about an item and its relevance to their family's history.
On Sunday, 4 May 2003, our meeting featured a presentation by Elizabeth Kelley Kerstens, CGRS, CGL, co-creator Geneweaver, a computer program to detail family health history.
On Sunday, 9 March 2003, our meeting featured a presentation on "The Spanish-American War" from the perspective of Puerto Rico by Miguel Hernandez with assistance from Fernando Carmenaro. Also, MCGS member Arthur Green provided a military artifact display.
On Saturday, 25 January 2003, our Society held "Putting the Pieces Together" workshop. The workshop offers a choice of 9 topics and Q&A session with the Lecturers.
On Sunday, 12 January 2003, our meeting featured a presentation "Get'em While They're Young" by Casey Zahn. Also, presented were the prizes to our Family History Month Essay Contest winners.
On Friday, 6 December 2002, our Society sponsored its Holiday Bus Trip to Historic Sleepy Hollow Country. The itinerary included Washington Irving's Sunnyside in Tarrytown, NY, a luncheon buffet at the Tarrytown Hilton and a visit to Van Cortland Manor.
On Sunday, 10 November 2002, a presentation on the holdings of the Philadephia Library and their treasures by Walter Stock was given.
On Sunday, 20 October 2002, our Society held their annual Family History Month Luncheon and awarded the charter member certificates for the First Families of Old Monmouth County.
On Saturday, 12 October 2002, our Society participated in the Monmouth County Archives fair "Archives Day" at the Monmouth County Library headquarters.
On Saturday, 5 October 2002, our Society held "Get a Research Skills Tune-Up" workshop. Topics offered: Methodology; Hatched, Matched & Dispatched; Halls of Justice: Court Records; Stand Up & Be Counted: Census Records; Can you cross the pond? Your Immigrant Origins; Saints & Sinners: Church/Cemetery research.

On Friday, 27 September 2002, our Society sponsored its Fall Bus Trip to New York City. The itinerary included a tour of NY Public Library, lunch at Fraunces Tavern, and a tour of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.
On Sunday, 8 September 2002, our first Fall meeting had a presentation on the holdings of the New York Public Library by Mary Ellen Rogan.
On Sunday, 14 July 2002, our July meeting featured a Show-and-Tell. This year's theme was "Defending the Stars and Stripes, at Home and Abroad". Attendees were encouraged to participate by talking about their own family history in the military or on the home front.
On Saturday, 15 June 2002, our society participated in the Genealogical Society of New Jersey's (GSNJ) Spring program. The meeting started at 9:30am in the Monmouth County Library headquarters on Symmes Drive in Manalapan. The morning lectures were Researching Lesser Known Resources in Monmouth County and Traditional vs. Computer Based Genealogical Research: Not Either/Or but Both. The presentation of the book "A Pictorial Tour of Old and Unusual Graveyards of Monmouth County" was presented by the author, Edward Raser in the afternoon session.
On Saturday, 8 June 2002, our society held an Ethnic Heritage Day and provided one-to-one genealogy advice on a broad range of nationalities of origin and ethnic groups. We had experts covering the following topics: African-American, Hispanic, Italian, German, Irish, English, Jewish, Native American, and Ukrainian. The was from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, Symmes Road, Manalapan, NJ. There was no charge for participating.
On Sunday, 5 May 2002, our May meeting featured a talk on "Naturalizations" by Mr. Arnie Lang.
On Friday, 26 April 2002, held a bus trip to Ellis Island including the New American Family Immigration History Center.
On Saturday, 13 April 2002, our society held an Intermediate-level genealogy course.
On Sunday, 10 March 2002, our March meeting featured a talk on "Loyalists" by Mr. Todd Braisted.
On Sunday, 13 Jan 2002, our society's January meeting featured a talk on the soon-to-be-released 1930 US census presented by John Celardo of the National Archives.
On Thursday, 20 September 2001, we sponsored a bus trip to Tarrytown, NY to visit Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate and the Union Church of Pocantico Hills.
On Sunday, 8 July 2001, our meeting consisted of a show-and-tell by the attendees focusing on the oldest possession in your house.
On 23 June 2001, our society held an Ethnic Workshop from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Broad Street, Red Bank, NJ.
On Sunday, 13 May 2001, our society's May meeting featured a talk titled "The World According to Elizabeth" discussing the book Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian by Elizabeth Shown Mills. This book presents the new standard for citing genealogical evidence. The presentation was by Bea Denman Howley, a member and past president of our society.
On Thursday, 12 April 2001, we sponsored a bus trip to the Culinary Institute of America and Vanderbilt Mansion in the Mid-Hudson Vallen in New York State.
On Saturday, 7 April 2001, our society held an intermediate genealogy workshop titled "Reconstruct Your Family History: Methods and Resources" in Red Bank, NJ.
On Sunday, 11 March 2001, our society's March meeting featured a talk by John Konvalinka titled "Avoid Tangles in the World Wide Web" focusing on successful ways to use the Web in genealogy research.
On Sunday, 5 November 2000, our society presented a genealogy class for beginers in Wall, New Jersey.
On Wednesday, 27 September 2000, the Monmouth County Genealogy Society sponsored a bus trip to Trenton, New Jersey for genealogical research at the New Jersey Archives.
On Sunday, 10 September 2000, our September meeting was a tour of the Old Brick Reform Church in Marlboro.
On Saturday, 26 August 2000, our society held a genealogy class for beginners covering: First Steps, Vital Records, the Federal Census, Using the Internet, Family History Centers, and an introduction to European Research.
On Sunday, 9 July 2000, the July meeting of our society featured our annual show and tell session which was well attended and interesting.
On Sunday, 7 May 2000, the May meeting of our society featured an excellent talk and slide show on the "Genealogical Holdings of the New Jersey Historical Society" given by James A. Kaser, the director of that society's library.
On Sunday, 12 March 2000, the March meeting of our society featured talks on the history and genealogy of the lesser-known Celtic nations of Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, and Isle of Man.
On Sunday, 9 January 2000, the January meeting of our society featured a talk by member Rogers Finch titled "Can You Prove It? Evaluating Your Evidence" about the process of analyzing evicence and providing the proof necessary to meet modern genealogical standards.
On Saturday, 20 November 1999, we held part two of our beginning genealogy course.
On Sunday, 14 November 1999, member Beverly Yackel gave a talk on "Census Quirks" - evaluating and interpreting U.S. Federal census returns.
On Saturday, 23 October 1999, we held part one of a genealogy course for beginners titled "Finding the Key".
On Sunday, 12 September 1999, the September meeting of our society featured a talk by Neil Ann Levine on Mennonite and Amish Research.
On Sunday, 11 July 1999, the July meeting of our society featured a show-and-tell session by attendees titled "Picture This". Many members and guests brought pictures or photographs and talked about them.
On Sunday, 2 May 1999, the May meeting of our society featured a talk by Barry Moreno on "Myths of Ellis Island".
On Saturday, 17 April 1999, our society co-sponsored the Genealogical Society of New Jersey's Spring Seminar featuring three lectures by Sharon DeBartolo Carmack. Topics were: "Flesh on the Bones: Putting Your Ancestors into Historical Perspective", "The Silent Woman: Bringing a Name to Life", and "The Immigrant Experience: From Steerage to Ellis Island".
On Friday, 26 March 1999, our society had a research trip to the National Archives branch in New York City.
On Sunday, 14 March 1999, our March meeting featured a talk on "Murder in Monmouth" illustrating a number of actual murder cases between 1850 and 1900 in Monmouth County, NJ along with the related documents from the Monmouth County Archives. The speaker was Gary Saretzky, Archivist for the County of Monmouth.
On Saturday, 13 February 1999, we ran an "Ethnic Workshop Exchange" where researchers stuck in a particular country or ethnic specialty could get suggestions on how to make further progress. Areas covered were: Canada, England, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Poland, Scandanavia, Scotland, and Native American research.
On Sunday, 10 January 1999, our January meeting featured a talk on "Writing Your Life Story" given by Nancy Oster Heydt.
On Saturday, 14 November 1998, we held the second part of a two-part beginning genealogy class.
On Sunday, 8 November 1998, our November meeting featured a talk on "Genealogical Resources in Trenton Area Repositories" given by Suzanne Nurnberg.
On Saturday, 3 October 1998, we held the first part of a two-part beginning genealogy class.
On Sunday, 25 October 1998, our society celebrated its tenth year and its new name with a luncheon. The speaker was Gary Parks, who co-founded and organized the society in 1988 when he was librarian/archivist at the Monmouth County Historical Association. He related his adventures and misadventures while researching samplers. A specialist in samplers, Mr. Parks curated an international exhibit of samplers from several famous collections including the Whitman candy company's collection and the Daughters of the American Revolution collection. Mr. Parks is now the executive director of the Slifer House Museum in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Entertainment was provided by a "Sweet Adelines" quartet.
On Sunday, 12 September 1998, Thomas Peters gave an interesting presentation on "Tracing Your Germanic Ancestors" with slides of many examples of both European and American record sources.
As of 1 August, 1998, the Monmouth County Genealogy Club becomes the Monmouth County Genealogy Society.
On Sunday, 12 Jul 1998, the July meeting of our club included a show-and-tell featuring items from members' "great-grandmother's kitchens or attics". There was also a tag sale of genealogy-related books and other items.
On Sunday, 3 May 1998, the May meeting of our club featured a talk on "The Resources of the David Library of the American Revolution" given by the library's director, David J. Fowler, Ph.D. The David Library is located in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania. It is dedicated to the study of American History between 1750 and 1800 and provides researchers with a large collection of material from that period including British as well as American documents.
On Saturday, 4 April 1998, a course for intermediate genealogists was given.
On Sunday, 8 March 1998, the March meeting of our club featured a talk by Bette Marie Epstein, Head of Reference at the New Jersey State Archives on the topic of "New Jersey Land Records".
On Sunday, 11 January 1998, the January meeting of our club featured a talk by Kevin Shelly titled "Internet for Genealogists"".
On Sunday, 9 November 1997, the November meeting of our club featured a talk by Virginia Banerjee titled "Keepsakes and Memories" about using artifacts and documents in your genealogy to paint a fuller picture of your ancestors. Preservation and handling of these artifacts was described in the talk.
On Saturday, 1 November 1997, the second part of a two-part genealogy class for beginners was held. Part 1 was on November 1.
On Sunday, 26 October 1997, the club held a luncheon to celebrate Family History Month. The speaker, Bernard Olsen, gave an interesting talk and slide show on "New Jersey's Role in the Civil War" focusing on six New Jersey soldiers and the letters they sent back home.
On Saturday, 4 October 1997, the first part of a two-part genealogy class for beginners was held. Part 2 was held on November 1.
On Sunday, 14 September 1997, Michael L. Strauss, A.G. gave a talk on "Genealogical Research in the New York Metropolitan Area."
On Sunday, 12 July 1997, our meeting was a show-and-tell session where attendees shared family stories and memorabilia. The meeting was well attended with most attendees talking about one or more heirlooms.
On Sunday, 4 May 1997, we met at Old Tennent Church for a lecture and tour on this historic church and surrounding cemetery.
On Saturday, 12 April 1997, an intermediate-level genealogy workshop was held where attendees chose six sessions out of the ten topics offered.
On Sunday, 9 March 1997, Kelle Blake, Assistant Director of the National Archives Mid-Atlantic Region gave an excellent talk on immigration and naturalization.
On Saturday, 8 March 1997, a beginning genealogy course was given.
On Sunday, 12 January 1997, club member Beverly Yackel gave a talk titled "Who Do You Say I Am: Leaving A Trail" on how you can ensure that future generations get a picture of your life and you will be remembered as a person, not as a statistic.
On Sunday, 10 November 1996, Cheryl A. Kleuke spoke on "Solving Philadelphia Research Problems".
On Sunday, 20 October 1996, we held a luncheon for Family History Month. The guest speaker, George Moss, spoke on "The Past Is Alive: The Jersey Shore as Seen Through Slides from the Victorian Era and Beyond".
On Saturday, 19 October 1996, club volunteers were available at the Monmouth County Historical Association library to answer genealogical questions from out-of-state members at our annual Phone-A-Fact.
On Saturday, 5 October 1996, an all-day Beginners Genealogy Workshop was held. Topics included: getting started, getting organized, state and local records, federal census and soundex, libraries, and other important sources.
On Sunday, 8 September 1996, Pamela Hasegawa spoke on the difficulties facing adoptees who are attempting to trace their roots.
On Sunday, 14 July 1996, the annual picnic meeting for members was held on the grounds of the Monmouth County Historical Association in Freehold.
On Sunday, 5 May 1996, Janet Riemer, Preservationist/Archivist at Rutgers University Libraries, presented "Genealogy Resources of the Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers Libraries"
On Tuesday, 16 May 1996, a bus trip was held to historic Brooklyn, New York. We visited the old Gravesend cemetery, drove past elegant Park Slope houses and visited the Brooklyn Historical Society's museum and library.
On Saturday, 13 April 1996, a genealogy workshop entitled "Beyond Beginners" was held covering:
  • Census records: Use and interpretation
  • Death records
  • Evaluation of evidence
  • Printed word: Library and other sources
  • Deed records


On Sunday, March 10, 1996, Helen M. Horner of Manasquan spoke on "Cemetery Research." Helen, an active member of the Monmouth County Genealogy Club, has attended genealogy courses at Brigham Young University. She also discussed the Monmouth County Genealogy Club's project of recording the Evergreen Cemetery in the Farmingdale area of Howell Township.
