ILGWU Rally for Roosevelt and Truman

The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union held a rally in South River to campaign for the 1944 election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. The union considered that Roosevelt's election to a fourth term as President was necessary "for a continuance of progressive government and for [their] objective of full employment." They raised funds for the election with voluntary contributions from union members.

The black and white photo was taken on Main Street in South River. The uppermost banner reads "To win the war and win the peace." In addition to Roosevelt and Truman, New Jersey's Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives are also mentioned prominently on the banner. Elmer H. Wene was defeated by H. Alexander Smith (Republican) and Arnold E. Ascherfeld was defeated by James C. Auchincloss (Republican) at the November 7, 1944 election.
