The 1900 Census identified 2,792 people living in the Borough of South River, with 1,155 of them listed as having been born outside the United States. By the year 2000, the population had increased to 15,322, with an estimated 4,032 residents born in a foreign country.

While the figures for 1900 are based on a complete count of the local population, the estimate of the foreign born in the year 2000 is based only on sampling data collected from a 1-in-6 sample and weighted to represent the total population.
