At the gate to the Mayhill Cemetery (where the vehicle is parked) there is an older lower section. The road goes up the short hill and the main section is there. This older, lower section has about 25 graves. I have weed-whacked the area, placed white wooden crosses (still short a couple) and plastic flowers. A flag was placed on the one military headstone (Josiah Brantley who fought in the Indian Wars - Blackhawk War). Interesting point is that a civilian headstone for Josiah Brantley is located in James Canyon Cemetery. The civilian headstone is old and of the type in use when he died (1890). His wife, Mariah Groesbeck Brantley, died four years before Josiah and is buried in this lower section. The military headstone for Josiah is next to her. |
