MAILING LIST



Mailing Lists are a method of keeping in touch with other researchers with the same area of interest. There are mailing lists for many locales including Colfax County and its progeny, Union County. There are also country and surname-specific mailing lists and mailing lists for special targets. RootsWeb maintains an index of all the mailing lists it houses at http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/index.html

The Colfax County mailing list does not generate much traffic. Subscribers may receive just a handful of messages every month. Do not expect daily mail from this list.



There are two "modes" for most mailing lists:

Mail Mode -- Every posting is received as a separate e-mail.

Digest Mode -- All postings made in a specific period (usually 12 hours) will be consolidated and sent as a single message. Digest mode may send messages more frequently if many messages are received within a period.

NOTE: You must turn off SIGNATURES before sending commands to the list server.

How to subscribe to "Mail Mode". How to subscribe to "Digest Mode".
1. To subscribe to "Mail Mode".
Send a message to
NMCOLFAX-L-request@rootsweb.com

that contains (in the body of the message) the command
subscribe

and no additional text.

2. To unsubscribe from "Mail Mode".
Send a message to
NMCOLFAX-L-request@rootsweb.com

that contains (in the body of the message) the command
unsubscribe

and no additional text.

 1. To subscribe to "Digest Mode".
Send a message to
NMCOLFAX-D-request@rootsweb.com

that contains (in the body of the message) the command
subscribe

and no additional text.

2. To unsubscribe from "Digest Mode".
Send a message to
NMCOLFAX-D-request@rootsweb.com

that contains (in the body of the message) the command
unsubscribe

and no additional text.


If you are changing your email address,
you should unsubscribe using the SAME email address
used originally to subscribe. If this is not possible,
manual intervention may be required.



3. To change from one "mode" to another, there are two steps.

First, send the command "unsubscribe" (without the quotes) to NMCOLFAX-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue Mail Mode, or to NMCOLFAX-D-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue Digest Mode.

Second, send the command "subscribe" (without the quotes) to NMCOLFAX-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving in Digest Mode, or to NMCOLFAX-L-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving in Mail Mode.

4. To change to NOMAIL mode
There is no formal NOMAIL mode. Please follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want messages to stop. When you are ready to start again, simply subscribe again.

After successfully subscribing to either mode you should receive a form-letter welcome message. This is your assurance that the subscription is complete. To post a message, send email to NMCOLFAX-L@rootsweb.com. It will be sent to everyone subscribed regardless of whether they are in mail mode or digest mode.
