![]() Stephen Watts Kearny ChapterNational Society Daughters of the American RevolutionSanta Fe, New MexicoCHAPTER REGENT Jeannie Fennell WELCOME ![]() Santa Fe, the oldest capitol city in the United States, was founded in 1607 by Spanish conquistadors under Don Pedro de Peralta, then governor for the colony. The DAR established its first New Mexico chapter here in 1898. Originally known as the Sunshine Chapter, the name was changed to honor General Stephen Watts Kearny, who led the first contingent of American Army soldiers into this city in 1846. Following the Mexican-American War in 1850, New Mexico became a territory of the United States, and in 1912, the 47th state of the Union. We are an active group of women with a strong commitment to the ideals of our National Society: Patriotism, Service to our community and our country's veterans, Education, and Historic Preservation. Meetings are held on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 10:00 A.M. except June through August and December. Most of the meetings are held in members' homes. In September we place displays in various places to commemorate Constitution Week. We collect telephone cards in November for the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque. We sponsor a senior high school girl to Girls State who then set up and operate city, county, and state governments that are designed to parallel New Mexico's own governing bodies. We attend naturalization ceremonies when they are held in Santa Fe and give participants a miniature flag and a copy of the flag code. Our chapter has been instrumental in assisting in the research that has provided genealogical evidence of the Spanish patriots of the Santa Fe Presidio making their descendants eligible for membership in DAR. A Christmas social is held the 2nd Saturday of December for all DAR and SAR members and guests. In June we participate in a Flag Ceremony on the Plaza in downtown Santa Fe. We welcome prospective members and assistance is provided in the area of lineage research. For more information regarding membership requirements, meeting dates, etc., please e-mail our Regent, Jeannie Fennell Visit the National Society of the DAR Spanish
