Serendipity rules!!! Quite by accident I stumbled today on
the article excerpted below, which I think must relate to
your/our LEWIS, CONKLING questions. The publication is of
dubious scholarly quality, though nicely printed--has articles
about doing genealogy as a patriotic duty, lots of lady
patrons whose husbands have last names as first names, and so
forth. I just happened to pull off the shelf one of the 2
volumes our library has (perhaps all that was published), and
out jumped FURMAN. I wonder who "H. Francis Smith" might
be--could it possibly be Herbert F. Seversmith before his
name-change operation? I'll be happy to copy the article &
send it (snail mail) if it's of interest. It is far from
meaty--only a page or two beyond what I summarize here. And,
of course, no source notes at all.

TOWNSEND.
IV. Zebulun^4 FURMAN (Moses^3,2, Robert^1). When listed
with his parents, he reads: "married Elizabeth,
daughter of Thomas ALLINGS; removed to Hempstead, Long
Island." When shown with his children: "[Z. F.] and
Mary Furman had issue: . . ."
V. Abraham^5 FURMAN (Zebulun^4, Moses^3,2, Robert^1)
[married] Letche, daughter of David NOSTRAND; had
issue [no more details than as follows]:
1. Zebulun, removed to Brookhaven; married Dorothy
RISLEY; died there about 1812.
2. Abraham.
3. Phoebe.
4. Daniel, removed to Huntington, Long Island;
married Elizabeth LEWIS, daughter of Daniel and
Mercy LEWIS, April 27, 1778.
5. Teshie (Letitia?).
6. Sarah.
7. Hannah
