Hi, group!

In the past I have posted to both Roots-L and soc.genealogy.surnames
regarding William Linn BEEKMAN, but I haven't received any very specific
information. Given the focus of this list, I thought I would try a
different approach. What *sources* (county records, books, archives,
etc.) can any of you suggest to answer the questions at the end of this
post?

Here's what I know about him (I don't have my notes in front of me, so
some details may be incorrect):

William Linn BEEKMAN was born 1/15/1813 to John BEEKMAN and Maria BORST in
Sharon, Schoharie Co. John's father William was a very prominent judge,
merchant, and farmer in the county. John died in 1819; Maria died
sometime after 1845. William Linn and his brother John are both named in
the will of their grandfather William in 1845; William Linn and John were
both living in Lockport, Niagara Co., at the time. A William BEEKMAN,
listed in the 1850 census as living in a boarding house in Lockport, is
certainly the same William Linn, but brother John does not appear anywhere
in the state in that census. William does not appear in the 1860 census
anywhere in New York.

My gg-grandfather William BEEKMAN was in Plumas Co., Calif., in 1860 with
a wife and 5 children. William's age is given as 45, New York as his
state of birth. He died ca. 1863, last known residence, Sierra Valley,
Plumas Co.

My questions:

* How can I prove (or disprove) that the 2 William BEEKMANs are the
same person?
* What records exist in Niagara Co. where the deaths of William or
John might be recorded?
* There is a 1950 article in the _Schoharie Co. Historical Quarterly_
on Judge William Beekman. It was largely based on a family scrapbook, or
some such thing. Where is this scrapbook now?
* Might there be family correspondence preserved somewhere? (I should
mention that this BEEKMAN family is not related to the more famous
BEEKMANs of NYC.)
* Is there a family Bible somewhere?
* Why would William and John have moved to Lockport around 1840?
* I can account for William and John in the 1820 federal census and the
1825 state census (living with his mother), but where is he between 1825
and 1845? Based on the 1840 census and the aforementioned article, I
would guess that they lived with their grandfather, Judge William, but I
have no proof of that.
* One W. BEEKMAN arrived in San Francisco from Panama on the ship New
Orleans in April 1852. Are there ship passenger lists for those
*leaving* New York or Boston around that time?

Any suggestions will be *greatly* appreciated!

Regards,
Dean Corwin
