My gr grandmother, Susan (Merrihew) Corbine had a half brother named
Leon Sherman. Leon was born in 1866, the son of Rebecca (Peabody)
Merrihew. In 1870, Leon was at the home of his grandparents, Leonard
and Mary Peabody in Harrisville, Lewis County, New York. Again in 1875,
Leon was with his grandparents but was going by the name of Leon
Peabody. I could not find Leon again until 1910 (35 years later) when
he surfaced in Mendocino, Calif and again in 1920. In 1925, Leon was
again in the home of his half sister and my gr grandmother, Susan
Corbine in Canton, New York but listed under the name of C.H. Raymond.
When Leon died on March 23, 1926 , he was buried in Black River
cemetery beside Susan under the name Charles H. Raymond. The mystery
is why he chose this name. Can anyone shed any light on this mystery?
