During the course of the American War a loyalist intelligence scout by the
name of Lt. Walter Sutherland of Sir John Johnson's King's Royal Regiment
of New York was fleeing to Canada in 1778 and on his way from the Mohawk
Valley, probably via Lake Champlain, sought refuge with a woman whose first
name has come down in his account of the escapade.

The woman's name was "Humiah" and as part of his gratitude to her Lt
Sutherland named his daughter in her honour. My query is to see if anyone in
this group has ever seen this unusual name elsewhere so that we might get
closer to identifying the original Humiah.
