On a hilltop, 2 miles east of Houston, Minnesota, lies the JOHNSTON family
cemetery. It contains the graves of the original settlers, Joseph and Polly
Johnston, plus some of their descendants.

The tombstones read Johnston. Almost all official records in Wisconsin and
Minnesota show the family as Johnson. Turns out, the name really was Johnston
in New York. Hurray for oral tradition.

This is all the information I have been able to collect so far, in
chronological order:

1792 Mary (Polly) is born on 11-14-92 or 11-7-93 in VERMONT. Her father's
name was Martin, which could be either first or last name.

1794 Joseph Johnston is born 4-23-94 or 4-24-94 in NEW JERSEY.

1818 marriage?

1819 Child 1: Sanford is born in NEW YORK. He later marries Mary J.
BURROWS, 1847 in Wisconsin. 8 children. Both disappear in the 1860's, and the
kids are adopted out.

1820 Child 2: William is born in NY. He marries Christa CAMERON, 1848 in
Wisconsin. 6 children. They ultimately move to Northern Minnesota.

1820 Census - inconclusive

1823 Child 3: Debora is born in NY. She marries John BURR, 1846 in
Wisconsin. 3 children.

1824 Child 4: Delilah S is born in NY. She marries David H. LOGAN, 1847 in
Wisconsin. 4 children.

1827 Child 5: David is born 5-3-27 in NY. He drowns 8-25-59 in Root River.

1829 Child 6: Barney B. is born 11-1-29 in NY. He marries his housekeeper
Catherine J FEATH, 1874 in Houston MN. 1 child. He will be the support for
his old mother and inherit most of the farm.

1830 CENSUS: THE FAMILY FARMS IN DRYDEN, TOMPKINS COUNTY, NY. Census also
lists one female btw 60 and 70 yrs old.

1832 Child 7: Esther is born in NY.

1834 Child 8: Albert is born in NY. Marries an Emily. At least 3 children.
Last seen in the 1870 census of New Hartford MN.

1840 CENSUS: THE FAMILY SETTLES IN WESTERN HALF OF CORTLANDVILLE, CORTLAND
COUNTY, NY. This location is but a few miles away from the 1830 place in
Tompkins county.

1844 The familee moves to MILWAUKEE WI.

1847 The family settles in Dodge County, Wisconsin.

1850 CENSUS: FAMILY IS FARMING IN BEAVER DAM, DODGE CTY, WI. Only son
Sanford is separate, with his father-in-law John BURROWS in Waushara WI.

1854 In June 54, the family moves on to Houston, Minnesota.

1857 CENSUS: THE FAMILY IS FARMING IN HOUSTON, MINN.

1860 CENSUS: THE FAMILY IS FARMING IN HOUSTON, MINN. Deborah (BURR) is
still back in Beaver Dam WI with her family and with youngest brother,
Albert.

1870 CENSUS: Most of the family is in Houston MN. Son Albert is in New
Hartford, Winona cty, MN. Daughter Delilah (w. LOAGAN, m. WOODARD) in
Pleasant Hill, Winona cty, MN.

Any clues on where to go from here would be EXTREMELY appreciated. For 1830
and 1840 I succeded in "pattern matching" the known family member statistics
against all Johns(t)ons in New York state, but for 1820 I am drawing a blank.

TIA, Jeff
