I am looking for information on the early history of Avon, such as where
the settlers came from. [Some sections/towns were bought by MA companies;
I assume they sold land to "locals" before moving there. I don't know if
Avon is one of these towns.]
My ancestor John RANSOM is there in 1810, near Ozi BLAKESLEE who appears
to be from Hartford CT. I am stuck on the origins of my RANSOM, who
married Amea AMES [several AMES families in the Avon/Livonia area;
origins unknown.]
I've studied what books I've found [1860 FRENCH's Gazeteer, mostly] and
would like to find O TURNER's 1851 book, "History of the Pioneer
Settlement of Phelps and Gorham's Purchase ...", reportedly indexed 1973
through Wayne Co Historical Society.
Also looking for "History of the Genesee Country (Western NY)..." by
Lockwood R DOTY, Chicago: 1925. Any hints? Especially, any suggestions
on good reading about this place and time? I'm currently reading "Joseph
ELLICOTT and the Holland Land Company", by CHAZANOF, but it's a little too
west of my people and place.
Where are the Avon/Caledonia/Livonia/Hartford/Bloomfield(s) land records
of this time period? I understand Phelps & Gorham set up a land office at
Canandaigua; also that they sold out to another company, and angry
settlers destroyed many land records. Are the Ontario Co NY land records
intact?
Thanks for any help or hints; this search has really heated up my interest
in the history of this area.
