Back in the 1940's and 1950's there was a long-running series of columns on
local history of Western New York by Arch Merrill, published in the
Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (every Sunday, I think). The columns were
collected an published in a series of probably six to eight books during
this period. I'm sure that Avon, LIvonia, and all of the other towns in
that area were covered in detail, as well as the history of the land
purchases for the region as a whole. They're undoubtedly long since out of
print, but you should be able to get them via interlibrary loan from the
Rochester Public Library.
