I think general answers to a specific request (messages posted to the
board instead of a private e-mail response) are good for one reason
above all: Sometimes a tip that helps one person with a specific need
also helps another person with a totally different problem. I know
that I have sometimes read queries and answers between other folks
and picked up useful addresses, research hints and so on. More than
once, I've run into someone with a similar interest and we have
helped one another out.
