LIBRARIES AND ARCHIVES
----------------------
* SCHENECTADY COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY, 99 Clinton St., 12305-2083. Voice 518-
372-9837, Fax 518-386-2241. Hours are 9-9 Monday-Thursday, 9-5 Saturday and

SCPL has U.S. census microfilm for Schenectady County, area city directories
and a large local history collection. We also have a large collection of
local newspapers dating back to 1822, including last year's addition of 37
reels of microfilm from the New York State Newspaper Project.
While we are not genealogists and do not have the staff to do much research
for you, we will take mail questions for city directory searches. We will do
newspaper searches if you have a reasonably close date. The minimum fee is
$3.00 (make check out to SCPL).
One of our long-term projects is indexing obituaries and marriage and birth
announcements. We have nearly complete coverage of papers from 1822 to 1862,
and indexing of one paper for 1863-65, 1868, 1881-85, 1902-1907, 1909, 1913-
16, 1918, 1975-date. Marriages for those years in the 1800s, 1902, and 1993-
date are done but not yet printed. Births are done for 1902 and 1993-date.
I hope to have much of the remaining 1800s covered by the end of 1996.
If you need some information from the period covered in the indexes, you may
e-mail me and I'll send you the citations.
* SCHENECTADY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, 32 Washington Ave., 12308, 518-374-
0263. Hours are 1-5 Monday-Friday, 9-1 2nd Saturday of the month. Minor
charge to non-members.
The SCHS library is the major genealogical resource in Schenectady. Their
holdings include:
3,000 books of history and genealogy
109 bound volumes of newspapers from 1803 to 1915, with more on microfilm
1,750 family folders
16,000 documents
5,000 legal papers
300 original wills
1,300 deeds
700 military commissions
32 drawers of pamphlets
15 oral history tapes
6 local history slide shows
Their microfilm collection also includes church records, Revolutionary War
records, cemetery records and the diary of Jonathan Pearson. They have every
1850 census record from every county in New York State, and the 1900 census
from the entire state except the New York City area.
Some of their unique items include:
Letter books of Daniel Campbell (1740-1802), a wealthy Schenectady merchant,
land owner and Indian trader whose house still stands at Church and State.
The diaries of Harriet Mumford Page (1807-1867), a brilliant, educated society
leader and wife of Alonzo C. Paige, Justice of the New York State Supreme
Court.
Personal papers belonging to the "Electrical Wizard," Charles Proteus
Steinmetz (1865-1923). Employed by the General Electric Co., Steinmetz was
also a professor at Union College, a member of the City Common Council under
Socialist Mayor Lunn.
The letters of John Glen (1735-1828), quartermaster in the French and Indian
War and the Revolutionary War. Stationed in Schenectady, Glen played host to
General Washington. His house still stands south of the YWCA on Washington
Avenue.
Maps drawn by James Frost (1783-1851), surveyor for James Duane, the founder
of Duanesburg.
* SCHENECTADY CITY HISTORY CENTER, City Hall, 12305, 518-382-5088. Hours are
10-5, Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
The City History Center does not focus on genealogical research, but it does
have many records and artifacts, including the microphone Franklin D.
Roosevelt used for his fireside chats.
** WHERE ARE THEY?
SCPL is located at the corner of Liberty and Clinton Streets. We are across a
corner from City Hall, down the street from Union College (which also has a
historical collection) and a few minutes' drive from the Historical Society.
If you're in the area for a few days, you might want to visit the New York
State Library in Albany. Check out their gopher at unix2.nysed.gov for
information on their resources.
