My great grandfather emigrated from Baden to either New York City or
Philadelphia in 1865 and joined the US Army, probably a Volunteer
Regiment, and was in North Carolina with Schofield. (I can't find a
record of any of this: I think he deserted the Army in Baden and
left for America.)

He seems to have gone back to Baden, because he is in the
records as arriving in New York City in January, 1867 when he
joined the Army again, and served at Fortress Monroe, Virginia.

Does anyone have an idea when he would have been eligible to
apply for US citizenship?
