If you're not convenient to Albany (where you can search these yourself),
the NY State Archives will search the NYS death indexes, charging $5 for
a 3 year search, and providing date and locality of death. Multiple hits
will be reported. The Archives has no death records themselves, only the
indexes.
Once you have the date and place of death, you can get his death certificate
from the Registrar of Vital Statistics in that locality for $10 or $11.
Both of these services will normally provide reasonably quick turnaround.
An alternative is to write directly to the NY State Dept of Health in Albany.
One stop shopping, but it normally takes about 4 months for a response.
Regards,
Charles Sullivan
