Hi Dan

I wanted to get some obits from the Staten Island Advance but did not
have very much success in finding a way of doing it.

> Does anyone know what Staten Island (around Richmond) paper would be
>likely to have an obit in 1911? I'll be going to the State Library in
>Albany in the next couple of weeks, so if there's a good title if SI
>history I should look for, I'd appreciate a lead.

I was sent this:

The Staten Island Advance dates back to about 1886 but was known as the
Richmond County Advance at least up to 1902 and was published only
biweekly then. There were several other newspapers published on Staten
Island in those days which you should also plan to check. I have found
some issues to be incomplete.

I was told that the New York State Library in Albany had a webpage but
no one could tell me its' URL.

One book about Staten Island is "Annals of Staten Island by J.J. Clute,
published by Press of Chas. Vogt, 114 Fulton Street, 1877. It give short
bios on various SI families. I don't have the book myself. I live in England
but my brother, who lives in the US got it via interlibrary loan.

> The little I know about George;
> He purchased a plot in The Moravian Cemetery in 1895 to bury his 11 yr
>old son, George H.PRIER. George Sr. was buried there, Nov. 8,1911.
>He had at least three daughters, Antoinette, Burtha, and Louise.

If George had a plot in the Moravian Cemetery then I would have thought
that he was Moravian. The Cemetery is in New Dorp. My family went to
the Moravian church in Great Kills, SI and some of my family are buried
in the Moravian Cemetery but that is not going to help you very much is
it.

In the Annals of Staten Island is a short history of the Moravians on the
Island which would be interesting if you thought that George was
Moravian.

I am sorry but I don't know any of the names your son is researching. I
think it is a great project.
