I am looking for information on my g-g-g Grangfather William Burnett
b. Nov. 1790 somewhere in NY State- d. 9/15/1870 in Phelps, Ontario
County. He married Mary Couchman, b. 2/7/1797 - d. 3/7/1870. Mary
was a daughter of Henry Couchman of Rensselaerville, Albany County.
William and Mary married 2/26/1815, in Rennselaerville.
William is listed in the 1820 federal census in Broome, Schoharie
County, NY. At the time of 1820 census there were listed:
1 male age 26-45, 3 females under 10 yrs. and 1 female 16-26 yrs.
I am pretty sure that this is my g-g-g Grandfather, William.
My g-g Grandfather Josiah Burnett was born, 8/16/1822 in Broome,
Schoharie County, I believe.
Mainly what I want to know is who were William Burnetts parents
and where were they from. I have reviewed the 1790, 1800, and
1810 census. In the 1790 census, the area which later became
Schoharie County was listed under Albany County and no Burnetts,
however, there were several Burnet(t)s from 1800 onward.
Given naming patterns, I have thought that William's father may have
been a Josiah Burnett, because Williams first born son, my g-g was
Josiah. But my search revealed a Josiah Burnett listed on the 1800
federal census in nearby Bristol, Schoharie who was 26-45 at the
time with a female 26-45 in the household and no children.
Also from LDS records I spied a Josia Burnet and Catharina Simon
with a daughter born, Hannah, 1794, I believe Columbia Gallatin
Reformed Church. From the chirch name, it seems that this
might have been a Dutch family with perhaps an "Americanized"
name.
I further considered a Matthew Burnett, from Middleburgh in the 1800 census
listed as 26-45 with 2 males and 2 females under 10 yrs. and apprently
a wife, 26-45. The Burnetts from Schoharie may have come from
Long Island, NY, NJ, and Dutchess County, NY. In fact the Matthew Burnett
above may have been from Duthcess county and listed in a circa 1770-1790
will of a Friderich Kuecherer (Kickler) as expected to wed Elizabeth Kickler.
I have found an LDS record of a Matthew Burnett and Elizabeth Chickens,
who had a daughter Martha around 1797. But, I believe this may have been a
first born, so this would exclude Burnett/Chickens as parents of my g-g-g
Grandfather.
Any help in the way of a name, suggestion for research areas of materials
anythng would be appreciated.
Mike Burnett
