Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay Towns were cut from Queens
County in 1899 to form Nassau County. In 1898 when Greater New York City
was formed, the Rockaway Peninsula was cut from Hempstead and added to the
new Borough of Queens. There are no Towns in Queens anymore ... all were
abolished 12-31-1897 to get ready for 1-1-1898, Greater New York. For one
year 1898-1899 1/3 of Queens County was inside Greater New York and 2/3 of
it outside. This unworkable system resulted in Nassau County in 1899.
Huntington was divided in 1872. Southern 1/3 became Town of Babylon. It's
possible some of the Huntington listings could be what is now Babylon.
I'll look up any citations ... index gives roll numbers, pages, etc.
