Mike,
Thank you for the information about Pound Ridge's history "God's Country". I
have seen Pound Ridge also spelled Poundridge. Which is correct?
The Smead family may not have been there long enough to have been part of the
history of the area. Ithiel Smead was born in Putney, Vermont in 1776,
married to Diadema from New York in 1799, had Wesley in Pound Ridge 23 Dec.
1800, Eliza in Haverstraw, Rockland Co., NY in 1802, participated in the 4th
of July services in Cincinnati, OH in 1815 as the Rev. Ithiel Smead, was
listed as physician in Cincinnati City Directory of 1819 as physician, was a
member of the Medical Society of Michigan in 1835, and died in Detroit, MI 9
July 1845. His obituary lists him as physician/surgeion. If you have a copy
of the Pound Ridge history, perhaps you could check and see if the family is
listed. If so, I need to know where to get a copy.
Wesley Smead died 6 January 1871 in Poughkeepsie, NY, has a huge mausoleum in
Poughkeepsie Cemetery, but there is no information as to his place of birth
on record. Perhaps newspapers of the period would have an obituary. How do
I access such news items? Wesley owned a bank in Cincinnati, and there is an
eleven foot portrait of him which is now at the Univ. of Indiana at
Bloomington. Surely there should be some proof of his birth and parentage
somewhere. I will appreciate any help I can get. Beryl Smead
