Here's a bit more from my 1887 marriage license. [Actually, I have a
"verified transcript" made in 1977]
For place of the marriage of my great-grandparents, it gives "Town of
Huntington" [no community w/in the Town] and lists C. W. Powell Clergyman
as the "person solemnizing this marriage."
I eventually found this marriage in the local newspaper "The Long
Islander" published at Huntington. My great-grandparents were married at
Northport [a community w/in the Town of Huntington]. I found C. W. Powell
in the paper as preacher at St. Paul's M. E. Church, Northport. This fit,
since my great-grandmother's family were strong Methodists and her being
married by the Methodist minister made sense.
If you get an early NYS marriage be warned that you may get as "place of
marriage" only Town of ..... and you'll need to check where in the Town
and may have to match the clergyman via the newspaper to the local
churches.
