Thanks for your interest and the input about Greenfield-Deerfield area and
about your g g grandmother Hester Smead Dewey. A Smead relative sent me the
Smead genealogy pages from "The History of Deerfield" and the Smeads were
involved in the 1704 raid by Indians and some killed and some taken to
Canada. I just read "The Unredeemed Captive" by Demos about Eunice Williams
who was captured in that raid and did not wish to return. Some Smead women
were mentioned in the book by their married names. John Smead, grandfather
of Ithiel Smead was captured at Fort Mass. in 1746, taken to Canada and
later returned. I would be interested to find out the history of your
Greenfield gggrandmother Hester Smead Dewey's middle name. Let me know if
you find out anything.
