"Although the first Federal Census was made in 1790 and is valuable for
determining the presence of a family in a particular state, such as
New York State, not sufficient details are given. Previous to the
Federal census of 1850 and the New York State census of 1855, only the
names of families are given.
New York State differs from some of the other states, in that the county
census records are kept in each county clerk's office. The Manuscripts
and History Division of the New York State Library has on file the 1880,
1915 and 1925 census for every county of the state.
The following inventory of New York State and Federal census records
present in the state was prepared in 1941 by Miss Edna Jacobsen, Head of
the Manuscripts and History of the New York State Library. So far as we
know, these census records are still available in the various counties.
After 1850, the age to the nearest year of the husband, wife and
children is given in the census. Suitable arrangements will have to be
made with various county clerks to obtain this information."
Then follows the inventory of records by county; I will be glad to do
lookups by e-mail.
