NYS census Records

There is an 1825 census available for Washington Co., NY. This census
notes if someone was born into or died in the particular household
within a year of the census being taken. Also notes the number of males
eligible to serve in the militia.

The 1865 state census - at least for Allegany Co. - lists some data
regarding Civil War Service. This may not be ALL of those who served
from each town, but I know I found dates, places, and cause of death for
several family members who died in the war.

I have a terrific guide for anyone doing research in NYS - "New York
Genealogical Research" by George K. Schweitzer, Ph.D., Sc.D. (1995)
which I bought for $12.95 from a small book company here in RI. This
might be available from Hope Press too, I'm not sure. If anyone is
interested and cannot find the book, get in touch with me and I will dig
up the e-mail address for the RI Co. which is on-line.

This guide lists available census records, state and federal, for each
county; names and addresses for historical and genealogical societies;
major repositories in and out of state for those doing research on NY
families and a general description of what types of records can be found
there; dates when county was formed, and maps at various points
throughout NY's history. 250 pages worth of info.
