A terrific guide for anyone doing research in NYS is "New York
Genealogical Research" by George K. Schweitzer, Ph.D., Sc.D. (1995)
which I bought for $12.95 plus postage from Quintin Publications a small
book company in RI.

The on-line e-mail address for Quintin Publications is:

http://www.quintinpublications.com

The research guide is the first book listed under the books available
for NYS. Check out the other offerings too.

This guide lists the available census records, state and federal, for
each county; names and addresses for historical and genealogical
societies; major repositories in and out of state for those doing
research on NY families and a general description of what types of
records can be found there; dates when county was formed, and maps at
various points throughout NY's history. 250 pages worth of info.
