Not a stupid question at all ... as far as I know there was only the one
regiment of volunteer Engineers in the federal army, and this was the
50th NY. I believe they or at least some of them were originally the
15th NY Engineers, but this was absorbed in the 50th. This was a
regiment raised like all the others, and many of them were recruited in
this part of upstate NY, between Rochester and Elmira. I know some of
the recruits from Yates County worked to build the bridge at
Fredericksburg before the Union assault.
