To Leatherstocking Friends,
At our Tucson Senior Citizen first Genealogy meeting, one member asked where
Marshall, Oneida Co was. She had sent a letter to Marshall, NY, and of course
it was returned to her. What she didn't realize was that it probably is a
'TOWN", and not a city/village. Being a west-coaster, she had not heard of
Towns as opposed to numbered townships in the West
First question: Is Marshall, Oneida Co, NY a township and not a city/village?
I believe Marshall might be near Utica.
Second question: does anyone have the address of the Oneida Historical
Society in Utica. I have been there several times and found the volunteers
more than helpful, but I do not have the address with me.
Third question: What was the reason that so many 1780-1810 New Englanders
came to the Leatherstocking area?Free land, best growing soil, fewer Indians?
What made this their destination?
Thanks to all. Joan j-bakeman@msn.com
