Thank you everyone who responded to my question about the NY State
censuses of 1855-65-75, and their indexes. As these responses were sent
directly to me, and as a number of other people also expressed an
interest in answers to my questions, I am posting those responses
below.

Hi

The 1855 NYS census for Chautauqua Co- has been indexed and I know
that

the ones for Cattaraugus County are also indexed. Beyond that I donot
know.

Most of these can be ordered through the LDS Family History Centers.

If one is near you ask and someone will help you order them.

lionel,

the 1865 and 1875(and maybe 1855) ny state census is available from

the mormon church. the micro films are divided by county.

they are basicly photos of the actual pages the enumerator

wrote on as he walk down the street. the pages are sectioned by
villages.

this written at the top of the page. they are in no particular order,
atleast

as far as i could tell. they aren't too bad, but if you don't know a
town

or atleast a county your out of luck, i don't think there is any
index.

the 1900 federal census is indexed, but i am not sure how early

the indexed federal censes' go, i think maybe the 1880 census is a

detailed census.

good luck,

tim

Subject: NYS Census

NYS census taken in 1825,35,45,55,65,75,92,1905,1915, and 1925. Only
the

ones after 1850 list each family memner's name, others just number in
age

groups and head of house.

While some may be indexed by locals, I don't believe there is any
complete

index that I know of. Censuses are usually found in the local county
clerk's

office, at the NYS Library in Albany, NY, the LDS has them and A.G.L.
(I

think those initials are right) It's the lending system. They may be

available thru inter library loan in some places. They are not
complete, not

all survived. 1865 lists Civil War dead, widows, and I guess vets,
with

units. Many have deaths and marriages that occurred that past year and
maybe

births, can't remember without looking it up. Nice feature, some years
tells

state of birth if not NYS and the COUNTY of birth if in New York
State.

I do not know about other counties but my county has been indexed and

is available at the local FHC and the local library. Also look-ups
through

the Orleans County web page.

2. Are microfilms of the census records available?

Yes, you should be able to order them at your FHC.

I recall ordering the 1845 census at my local LDS Family History

Center. I found my relative, but I guess that's becaus eit was a
small

town.

I will note that there is quite a bit of information, right down to
how

many cows, pigs and other animals, how much fabric was produced in the

household the previous year etc. etc.

UNless its NYC, it might be worth it for you to spend a few evenings

browsing films.

_____________

Your local Family History Center at a Mormon church will have the info

on fishe, under NY, census. You can order the films from there.

Brooklyn, 1855 & 1865 and maybe 1875, have the same type of information:

crops, number of horses, cows, and the industry in the area; and the going

wages in the ED for various occupations. It was great reading.

State censuses were done in 1825, 1835, 1845, 1855, 1865, 1875, 1892, 1905,

1915, and 1925. Not all records, particularly 1825-1845, are still extant

for all counties. Microfilms are available through the Family History

Centers and presumably at major libraries in New York. I'm not aware of

any indices; I've found what I needed by browsing (admittedly in a

sparsely-populated area).

New York took censuses in 1845, 1855, 1865, 1875, 1892, 1905, 1915, and

1925 I believe. These censuses do not survive for all counties. Most are

not indexed. There is an index for 1855 for Erie County outside the city of

Buffalo. They are available on microfilm. The 1855 is the first one that

lists all persons.
