While I'm waiting to find the article, I've got a couple questions.
Did Prof. Holtmann mention a pattern to the errors? Are they mostly
transcription problems? Is there anywhere to report the errors that we
find (with the corrections)?
And on a personal note...... Germans to America has my g-g-grandfather,
Heinrich ELBRECHT as a passenger on the Dorette, Bremen to NY, arriving
May 15, 1865. I can't find the Dorette mentioned in the NYT shipping
pages for that date; three different museums have failed to find the
Dorette landing on that day; and a paid researcher has scoured the
passenger arrivals for NY in 1865, and can find no Dorette. (and no
Heinrich ELBRECHT, arriving in NY in 1865).
The only census I've been able to find Heinrich on was the 1900 census,
where he stated he arrived in the US in 1865. So the year looks good.
The place looks good because he reported children b. in NY in 1868 &
1872. I found a Dorette in 1861 going from Bremen to NY. It appears to
be a similar ship (a bark) from the passenger list, so the ship looks
possible.
My guess is that the May 15 part is incorrect. I'm going to search the
shipping pages for March 15 first. Then try Sept 15 in case someone
abbreviated Sept as 'S', and it was read as a '5'.
Does anyone have some other suggestions?
thanks
jim
