I have reason to believe that at least one of our family members was adopted
from there. He was born 1870 and died 1940. The two male children in this
family (aged 10 and 6) died within 9 days of each other in Oct 1873. Was
there a flu epidemic or some such difficulty at that time?
A bit later this new son appears for whom I cannot locate a birth
certificate. On his marriage certificate, he lists his (adoptive)father's
name and lists mother as unknown. In census reports he is shown to be born
in NY and later in NJ. I believe he was adopted in NY of a NY birth mother
and grew up with the adoptive family in NJ.
Can one get adoptive records of deceased family members in NY? Any
suggestions as to how to proceed will be most appreciated.
