I've some Pattersons in my family that seem to have Canadian, Up State NY,
and Pennsylvania connections -- and maybe Scotland. Confusing because the
few references I have contradict each other. My great great grandmother,
Emma Patterson, married Hubert Byrnes in NYC in 1872 at the Methodist
Episcopal Church on Greene Street. On her marriage licen. she said her
father Hugh Patterson was born in Pennsylvania and her mother, Margaret
Abbott was born in England. We have her being born in Canada about 1854. In
the 1870 Census I have different nationalities -- Scottish!

Ward 5 ED 3 Pg 21

Hugh Patterson, 43, m, Boilermaker, born Scotland
Margt, 43, f, born Scotland
Hugh, 20, m, laborer, born NY
Mathew, 20, m, laborer, born NY
Emma, 16, f, born NY
James, 9, m, born NY
Mary J, 10, f, born NY
Maggie, 7, f, born NY
Willie, 5, m, born NY

In NYC Directory he is listed as a smith.

The family seems to vanish from NYC before 1880; and I havent find them in
the 1860 census yet.
My grandmother, Emma Patterson's grandchild, was also born in Canada and
her cousin was born in Canada.
On Emma's maggiage licen. her name is spelt as both Patterson and Pattison.

I dont see a connection between our families, but I know so little about my
Pattersons I thought I'd share what I've found in case you see something or
see something in the future.

regards

Michael
