Roster of those who died in the Civil War

Hi folks,
I know this has to out there someplace. I would like to see a roster
divided by county, but I can't even locate an overall roster of those who
died in the CW.

I am mostly interested in the North country counties of Clinton, Essex
and Franklin. I've tried a bunch of different search strings on the Web,
the NARA site, the NYSL, and the SARA site. Apparently I'm not looking
for the right thing, because I know it must be out there.

I think I've seen lists in some of the old county histories. Were
these taken from a census of some sort, or did the local Veterans groups
supply them?
