I fear you may have wandered into the worst of all nightmares. The
community of Athens, NY is about two thousand folks total. I suspect the
*town historian* is an honorary position with pay to match.
If you run just about anything (Chamber of Commerce, Mayor, City Council)
in the Yahoo Yellow Pages for Athens, NY you will receive listings for
those entities as much as seventy miles away -- but none in Athens itself.
Before you flay and roast the Athens Town Historian, you might want to
search for a library or museum or some other nearby entity related to your
question and try there.
I've recently had the great pleasure of digging into upstate New York
museums from California and found librarians and museum staff in some of
the smallest out of the way places willing and able to provide marvelous
assistance. In many ways I've completely changed my rather jaded attitude
about the willingness of New Yorkers to be of assistance. We've both won
this one.
I know that isn't a terribly satisfying answer to your question; but it may
solve the issue rather than just provide a way to slice and dice the town
historian.
Good luck and good hunting,
Mark Merritt
