Jim:
Sorry to be so long in getting back to your question ... try to get a copy
of"Generals in Blue: Lives of the Union Commanders" by Ezra J. Warner
[Louisians State University Press]. I have the hardback 1984 printing
copyright 1964.
General Russell's picture is on p. 417 and his biography runs pp. 416-417.
It says: "At the battle of Winchester [Virginia] on September 19, 1864,
while leading one of his brigades, Russell was killed instantly by a shell
fragment which tore through his heart."
It doesn't say if Gen. Sheridan was at the funeral or not, but does state
that he was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, in Salem, N.Y.
There is also a second volume on Confederate commanders by Warnerand I
believe a new work has recently come out on additional commanders, but
don't. off hand know the title.
Anyway, Jim, try to get this Union volume via inter-library loan.
