Upstate NY Church Records-where do they go?

Hi Folks!
I have written to all the Churchs in Athens NY, Greene County. To date,
none have replied pro or con to my query of a marriage record for my
ancestors who would have married approx 1874, probably in the town of
AThens.
My question now is this:
Do or did Churchs report such events to a "higher authority" ie, would
they have notified a higher up Church of their business transactions like
the performance of a marriage?
Reason Im asking this is that if the Churchs in Athens choose to not reply,
perhaps I could write to a Church higher up on the pecking order (for lack
of a better term only) that may also have a record of marriages performed
in Athens?
How would I find out which "higher up" Church would maybe have a copy of
the records of the lesser Church?
Thank you all in advance, I truly appreciate all the help I have recieved
from you all.
