Eric:
I've been working on the Velsor/Van Velsor family of Long Island and have
collected some data on the name elsewhere. Your spelling is closer to what
I've found in the early 1700's in Queens County ... Van Velse & Van
Velsen. There are Velzy, Velsey and Van Valzah forms of the name, too.
Here's some items based the various census indexes. I went to the census,
but we all know of errors and ommissions on both the census and indexes.
I think I have your Elizabeth in 1850:
1850 Census:
Ulster County .... Town of Hurley
VAN VELSON
Elijah 40 m laborer; Hannah 38 f; Phillip 15 m; Mary 12 f; Jacob 10 m;
Stephen 8 m; Andrew 3 m; Sarah 9/12 f. Family listed p. #230
Ulster County ..... Town of Olive
VAN VELSUN
Caleb 36 m carpenter; Sarah 26 f; Mariah 9 f; Delilah 7 f; Emmagene 5 f;
Emalinine 3 f; Sarah Ann 6/12 f. Family listed p. # 206
Elizabeth 72 f listed with family of Jacob Winchell, Jr. on p. # 205.
All of these people were born in New York State.

These people show up in 1860 under these citations:
1860 census:
Ulster County ....... Town of Olive
VAN VELSON
Caleb 43 master carpenter; Sarah 37; Elisabeth 19 school teacher; Delila
17 domestic; Eugene 14; Evalina 12; Sarah A. 9; William 7; Lenia 5; Theron
2; and WINCHEL, Elisabeth 72. Family listed 535-579 on page 820
Ulster County ...... Town of Shandaken
Elijah 50 day laborer; Hannah 47; Jacob W. 20 teamster; Steven K. 18 day
laborer; Andrew D. 13; Sarah E. 11 and Franklin A. 9
Again all these b. New York State.
Do you know if the Elisabeth Winchel living w/ Caleb Van Velson is the
same person as the Elizabeth Van Velsun living with Jacob Winchell, Jr. [a
name mix-up?] or are there 2 Elizabeths? I see a Winchell-Van Velson
connection with the names on these two censuses.
My 1870 only cover Kings, Queens and Suffolk.
I found nobody listed for the Ulster County 1880 soundex.
1900 census
Ulster County .... Town of Hurley
VAN VELSEN
Orlando 5/1852; Mary [wife] 6/1870 ED 95, sh 12, l 9 .. soundex card
I haven't organized my notes on the 1920 soundex cards, but a quick
reading doesn't show any in Ulster.
More time would be necessary to follow these people across NYS or into
other states. In that case, new indexes and soundexes. So far, I have NOT
traced any into any other state.
Did your Sarah Ann Van Velsen 1803-1882 marry? A Winchell, perhaps? She
doesn't show up on any of my indexes.
