My problem with Rebecca^6 is her son Peleg ^7 [b. 16 March 1777
Huntington d. 25 September 1839 Cold Spring Harbor] MAY BE illegitimate or
he MAY HAVE HAD a legitimate CONKLIN family. The Scudder Collection at
Huntington Historical has her marrying [no date] ------ CONKLIN. Peleg b.
1777 is her only child that I can find. In 1779, she marries Stephen
Brooks from New London, CT. Peleg, always listed as a CONKLIN, is
associated with his step-father up to the time of Brooks' death ca. 1815.
This family lived in Cold Spring Harbor. Following Brooks' death, Rebecca
marries an elderly widower Elijah CHICHESTER in 1819. She outlives her
only known son .. Peleg dies 1839; his mother 1842.
It's quite possible that Peleg was illegitimate ... although no record of
this shows in the Huntington Poor Books recently published ... bastardy
bonds, etc. The lady who put the Scudder Collection together in the early
1900's and 1910's either fudged the illegitimate birth or there really was
a marriage .... Peleg would have been conceived ca. July 1776. It's
possible his father was killed at the Battle of Long Island .. Rebecca had
no man to marry or man to charge with bastardy since he was dead ... we
know many first childrn at tha time came in less than 9 months of marriage
... the connection with Peleg to Rebecca has been in my grandmother's
family for 100 years .. one of her father's relatives was into genealogy
back in the 1890's early 1900's.
