Vital records in NY State are maintained at the local and
state level, but generally not at the county level (there
are apparently a few exceptions.)

For Death Records in NY State you must go either to the
local Registrar of Vital Statistics (generally located
at City/Town/Village Hall) where the death occurred or
to the NY State Dept of Health in Albany. The latter
route generally takes 4-6 months for a response but may
be your only alternative if you don't know exactly where
the death occurred, or don't know the exact date to within
month and year. Also, the NYSDOH will supply a photocopy;
local registrars can generally only provide a transcription.

The NY State Archives has no actual records but does have an
index. You can search this index yourself or have them do it.
They will search the index for one name for $5 (for up to 3
years) and return dates and localities for all hits.
You can then order the record from the local registrar.
A copy of the index is maintained at several locations other
than the NYS Archives, one being kept at the National Archives -
Northeast Region on Varick St in Manhattan.
