You should also try to find land records, military records, will/probate
records, tax records, and of course investigate the local churches for
records as to baptism, marriage, and death of its members.

Before the civil authorities got involved in keeping records, the churches
were the holders of this sort of information (as well as the social center of
our ancestors lives). Most people married within their churches or extended
families, and you can often follow their emigration and pioneering travels
through church ties.
