Fellow Researchers,
Perhaps this information has already been posted, but it was the first I've
heard. It was sent to me by a faithful volunteer at the Seattle, WA National
Archives
"John H. Carlin, former Gov. of Kansas, and now the country's top archivest,
is proposing a program to close all 12 of the regional archive locations. The
regional offices are found in 1) Waltham, MA holds records for states of CT,
ME, MA, NH, RI and VT; 2) NY, NY holds records for NY, NJ, Puerto Rico and the
US Virgin Islands; 3) Philadelphia holds records for Deleware , Maryland, PA,
VA, WV; 4) East Point, GA has AL, FL, Georgia, KY, MI, NC, SC, TN; 5) Chicago
IL has IL, INdiana, MI, MN, OH, WI; 6) Kansas City, MO for Iowa, Kansas,
Missouri, Nebraska; 7) Fort Worth TX for AZ, LA, NM, OK and TX; 8) Denver CO
for CO, MT, ND, SD, UT, WY and some records created in NM and AZ 9) Laguna
Niguel, CA for n.CA, HA, Nevada (except for Clark Co) and the American Samoa
Is; 11) Seattle, WA for ID, OR, WA; 12) Anchorage, AK for AK

Carlin proposes to build two mega-archives, perhaps in Washington DC and in
either CA or Kansas. The plan calls for all of the mcrofilm in the present
archives to be deposited in University libraries and public libraries, neither
of which has the space nor staff to accommodate the millions of researchers
who use these regional archives. Presently, the regional archives have
trained, professional staff persons in place.

If you wish that the archive system to remain as it is, write to Carlin at :
The National Archives, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740-6001.
Remember, if you wait for someone else to write the letter it many never get
done!"
