Thanks for your posting. I think we have a "genealogical urban legend"
running around in this closings of the National Archives branches. Ranks
up there with the Proctor & Gamble logo and Madalyn Murray O'Hair getting
religious programs off TV rumors that were so current for so long. One
problem w/ the Internet is that rumors of this sort can spread even more
quickly than word of mouth rumors. Thanks for doing a service and helping
to stop a letter writing campaign on a non-existant problem. I read that
the O'Hair rumor cost the government hundred of thousands of $$$ annually,
as the FCC policy required a letter back to the person writing in to
complain to tell them that the problem didn't exist. I suppose the
Archives might have a similiar policy ... what a waste of manpower and
money at a time people are demanding better service from the Archives. Can
we expect better service, if we lower our credibility [as a class of
people i. e. genealogists] by falling for and spreading untrue rumors?
