I am curious to know what sort of procedure was used by clerks writing
the federal census books. In particular, did they write the information
directly, without a preliminary draft? If there was a draft copy, did
the same person make the draft as made the final copy? Were the subjects
asked to write everything down if they were literate? Is there a book or
pamphlet (or web page?) addressing the subject?
What I'm looking for is an explanation for why my surname (SEE) was not
only indexed as LEE most of the time, but often to all appearances
written LEE by different clerks at different times and places. It has
made the name rather difficult to research!
Thanks,
David See

Researching SEE, DUTCHER, CONKLIN, DEKKER, and maybe also SNYDER,
KELLERHOUSE, and SCHUMACHER, depending on my mood.
