Susan:
This is too early for NY marriage licenses. They start 1880/1881,
depending on enforcement. My g-grandparents were married 1887 in Town of
Huntington, Suffolk County. This is what it asked for: date of marriage;
full name of bride & groom; residence of each; age; color "if other than
white"; birthplace; father and mother[maiden name] of each;
clergyman/official marrying them.
For the 1870's, probably a newspaper record or a church record. There were
civil marriage records for NYC, Brooklyn, and some larger cities that go
back to this time, but not state wide.
