Bob:
Historical question. Was Nantucket ever a part of New York? I know that
Martha's Vineyard was part of New York after the Duke of York established
the colony in 1664. He annexed L.I. from Connecticut and other islands
along the coast. When the first New York counties were established in
1683, Dukes
County was one of the originals. I know it is now Martha's Vineyard ...
did it ever include Nantucket? Was Nantucket a part of Plymouth Colony?
When did Massachusetts get Dukes County from New York? Was Martha's
Vineyard a part of Plymouth before it was annexed to New York?
Anyone know if Block Island was ever part of this annexation of off shore
islands? Besides L. I., Fisher's Island just off the Connecticut shoreline
is now a part of NY as a result of these annexations by the Duke of York.
Thanks to anyone who knows something of these colonial annexations from
one colony to another. Most of my early L.I. ancestors started out in New
Haven or Connecticut and w/out moving ended up in NY in 1664.
