It's History. Shortly after Cromwell crushed the Irish resistance (about
1650), Ireland was "cleared" of all the landholders. They were sent to
Connaught, the province in the west which is surrounded, almost as an island,
by the Shannon River. If they did not move promptly they were killed or
transported to the West Indies. Thousands of young Irish people (aged 12-40)
were rounded up (often shanghaiied) and sent as slaves to Barbadoes and
Jamaica. Others were transported under "indenture". There is a lot about
this in a book called "The Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland", but John
Prendergast and in the "The Story f the Irish Race" by Seamas MacManus.
I have also read some articles about the island of Montserrat which told
about the black population there who had Irish names and until fairly
recently spoke Irish/Gaelic.
So you see, your Moores MAY have been in Barbadoes for a very long time.
Take a look at the Caribbean Islands IGI at the FHC. There may be some
clues there.
