LESLIE, GORDON, CAMPBELL, GRANT, MUIR
Sources are:
1) Scots Kith & Kin which shows:
MOORE same as MUIR
MORE From MOIR, also MUIR; LESLIE
MOIR Aberdeenshire, 14th c.; GORDON
MUIR, MURE Galloway, Ayrshire 13th c.; GORDON
the following Moore variants are listed under Clan GORDON:
MOIR, MORE, MUIR, (& also MORRIS & MORRICE plus others not anything
like Moore, for a total of 62 surnames allied for protection)
the following are listed under Clan LESLIE
ABERNETHY, LESSLIE, & MORE.
I (J W Green III) recommend you visit Clan LESLIE at the games because
it has only 2 septs (surnames allied for protection) so they can afford
to give Moore much more attendtion & seem to do so.
2) Philip D. Smith's Tartan For Me! expanded 3rd Edition 1986 which shows:
surname tartan
MOOR MUIR
MOORE MUIR
MOORE GORDON
MOORE CAMPBELL
MORE GRANT
MORE MUIR
MORE LESLIE
MUIR MUIR
MUIR GORDON
MUIR CAMPBELL
If I (J W Green III) had a more certain claim to MOORE, I'd buy a
tie made of MUIR tartan at the games. I have one of Leslie for my
Moore claim & one of Grant for my McElroy (& I guess I can say Moore
also). I guess I'd have bought a Muir tie if I saw one.
3) Robert Bain's Clans & Tartans of Scotland 1st pub. 1938, reprinted 1970
Moir Gordon
More Leslie
*Muir family
I (J.W.Green III) bought Bain's book in the early 1970's so initially
claimed only Leslie for Moore. I never have joined Leslie or any clan
for Moore, but I go around to each clan's tent at the games & sign
their registry book giving my name, address, & ancestor (with date/state)
by which I claim their clan. The Leslie's have always been friendly at
the games I attend. They gave me their Moore handout. It was a genalogy
of colonial MOOREs, if memory serves me. I think they gave it to me at
the Grandfather Mt. Games in NC this past July. They also offered me a
sandwich for lunch, when they were fixing sandwiches for lunch for their
clan. Maybe one of you Scotch Moores should start setting up a tent at
the games for Clan Muir. I don't think Muir has had a tent at any games
I've attended. If you don't want to host a tent for Muir, then you might
help out with one of the clans that Moore is allied to for protection.
The surnames that a clan protects are called septs.
4) Clan Campbell folder (that they hand out at games) lists the
following septs:
Moore Muir
5) Clan Leslie folder (that they hand out at games) lists the
following septs:
More Moore
6) Clan Grant folder (that they hand out at games) lists the
following septs:
More of Drumcork
In going to the car to get my clan folders, I found the Moore handout
that I got from Clan Leslie. I was correct. On the back I'd written
that I got it from Leslie at the Sunday games at Grandfather Mt. this
past July. It is titled CLAN LESLIE: SEPTS
Part One: More
Part Two must be one of the other septs. On their folder they list
more septs than I found in Kith & Kin. Leslie lists the following plus
variants of the following:
Leslie, Abernathy, Bartholomew, Carnie/Carney, Laing/Lang, & More/Moore.
The More handout is 3 pages. It is too much to key-in. It covers
the origin of the surname, Moores in the 1200-1400's, Moores of note,
& why Moore might be allied to Leslie.
The Earl of Rothes is chief of Clan Leslie.
The Duke of Argyll is the chief of Clan Campbell.
The Rt. Hon. Lord Sprathspey is the 32nd hereditary chief of Clan Grant
In spite of Gordon having so much tartan in all the stores, I have no
folder on clan Gordon. They must not be putting up tents at the games.
I do not have the current address for these clans; my folders are several
years old & the officers change every year & with them their snail address.
Others of you may post addresses from their cards in the Highlander or
Family Tree newspaper. Personally, I recommend you see the clans at the
games in your area. If you need a schedule of games then ftp to
ftp.csn.net & cd /McCallum & get ScottishEvents. It is 27094 bytes & was
placed there Jan 21 1995, so is pretty current. Marc, you might want
to put this on the Moore listserver?
There is a forward for Clan Campbell & its septs. It contains 29
people. If you write ClaCampb@Freenet.FSU.Edu, they will all get the
posting. You may ask the group to add you to the forward, so you get
their postings. So far, only one person from a sept has written them,
he was a Thompson descendant & researcher. The people are mostly
posting genealogical queries.
If you are interested in doing a tent for MUIR, let me know. I need
to check the Highlander annual directory & see the status of the chief
& if anyone has started a clan Muir. Also I would like to check to see
if anyone is selling stuff made of Muir tartan. It is easier to hang
out with one of the parent clans already having a tent at your local
Games, but genealogists are not ones to take the easy road, right?
We love our many surnames too much! :-)
